I am an expert on Pyrex since I’ve watched them make it on “How It’s Made.” Also, this is a remarkably well written and interesting article with lots of links.

It’s interesting that most of the people in the comments who have experienced this pulled the dish straight from the oven and placed it directly on a cold stone counter top .

I had one explode on my when I was cleaning it. I tapped it on the side of the sink and it blew up. Cut my thumb up bad.

I had one explode when we took it out of the oven and placed it on an electric burner that was previously hot. Figured the temperature difference would be small since both things were hot. I guess I was wrong

Its a good article, but i’m not a fan of the title. He initially makes it sound like a made up problem, then goes into how the old product actually IS better at handling thermal shock and the switch WAS made to lower manufacturing costs.
While i think it would take an extreme environment to need the more durable glass, what the people are alleging is true

Well, thats the difference, thermal shock. The original material is much more resistant to it than the current

Where can I find some Pyrex that is GUARANTEED to explode?

Happened to my mom. The pieces went everywhere, some 20 ft away. She took it out of the oven and placed it on a cooktop eye (eye was off ).

We use some Pyrex at home. I’ll be mentioning this to Wifey.

When tempered glass goes, it really goes.

We had one come apart many years ago. Wifey was baking some fish and we refer now to that recipe as “Exploding Fishey.” It didn’t explode, but just came apart. It was a LARGE Pyrex baking pan...

Well written for Gizmodo.
Yes, to all you’ve said.

On your cold marble counter top right after you take it out of a 500 degree oven.

My wife had one come apart taking it out of the oven, but it just sort of broke up; it did not shatter nor explode.

That’s too hard. I want something that will blow up if you just look at it wrong...

Your expectations are unrealistic.

Supposedly, they did start using the cheaper glass on some of their products in the 1950s, and it was done initially because, while the cheaper glass is worse at handling thermal shock, it is more resistant to shattering when dropped (eg, on the floor). The total switchover that happened in the ‘90s was totally for cost savings.

She felt lucky to escape with both her eyes. It happened to a local TV Personality here too. He’s a consumer watchdog/advisor, and ended up getting the CEO on air to talk about propr py rex handling. His advice was to never take them out of the oven right away. When you’re done cooking, turn the oven off, crack the door and take it out after 5mins has passed.

A few christmas’s ago my BiL took one out, put it behind a tall pan that was cooking, and exploded, Glass was in 3 different rooms, it was very impressive and saved his face as the pan deflected it away.

That is not very convenient. When Wifey had one break apart, it was while taking it out of the oven. The Gizmodo story says Amazon Basics has a lune of borosilicate glass baking wear that's cheaper than Pyrex.

Note that while being more resistant to being dropped may well be a good tradeoff vs. protection from thermal shocks for customers, it’s definitely a plus for a company that is selling glassware and wants to cut down on glassware breaking in shipping.
